Our Super Powers

Super Amazing People

This is super corny. But before, I thought that COOU medical students were a bunch of nerds, and they are! I spent 30 minutes yesterday in a hole reading about different muscles. But at the same time, while COOUMSITES are similar in that they’re generally pretty driven, they’re incredibly diverse. So many people are doing so many different things, which is pretty cool, so you end up learning a ton from each other.

Why Do Fake Drugs Work Sometimes? - The Mystery of Placebos

Placebo is a substance or treatment of to intended therapeutic value. Common

placebos include inert tablets, inert injections, sham surgery, and other procedures.

Is the Placebo Effect Real?

The placebo effect when people taking so-called "dummy pills" begin to experience the side effects expected for the real pills is a controversial phenomenon that seems to show that when it comes to some things, it really is mind over matter.

Why Do Doctors Wear Green or Blue Scrubs?

Scrubs used to be white — the color of cleanliness. Then in the early 20th century, one influential doctor switched to green because he thought it would be easier on a surgeon’s eyes, according to an article in a 1998 issue of Today’s Surgical Nurse. Although it is hard to confirm whether green scrubs became popular for this reason, green may be especially well-suited to help doctors see better in the operating room because it is the opposite of red on the color wheel.

Why Doctors Wear Green or Blue Scrubs?

The color wheel was developed in an attempt to explain color perception in human eyes. In his book "Theory of Colors", the famous poet Goethe has written, "...for the colors diametrically opposed to each other... are those that reciprocally evoke each other in the eye."

Why Is the Medical Symbol a Snake on a Stick?

The caduceus is the staff carried by Hermes in Greek mythology and consequently by Hermes Trismegistus in Greco-Egyptian mythology. The same staff was also borne by heralds in general, for example by Iris, the messenger of Hera. It is a short staff entwined by two serpents, sometimes surmounted by wings.

Why Is the Medical Symbol a Snake on a Stick?

The image of serpents wrapped around a staff is a familiar one in the medical field, decorating pharmaceutical packaging and hospitals alike. Snakes bites are generally bad news, and so the animal might seem ill-fitting as the symbol of the medical profession, but the ancient emblem actually has a quite a story behind it.
